Buy a Swiss Travel Pass, book a few hotels, hop on the trains and off you go.

Or so it seems.

Switzerland has one of the world’s best public transport systems. But once you start planning a journey across several regions, what looks simple can quickly become surprisingly complicated.

Where Should You Base Yourself?

The Bernese Oberland alone has Interlaken, Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren and other beautiful mountain towns and villages that look like they belong in a fairy tale.

But which one actually makes sense as a base? Should you stay in a mountain village, or use a larger town or city instead?

And if you have 10 or 14 days, how many bases should you have?

Too few and you may spend hours travelling back and forth. Too many and your holiday becomes a succession of hotel check-outs, train journeys and moving luggage.

Which Swiss Rail Pass Should You Buy?

The Swiss Travel Pass seems like the obvious choice. Buy one pass and you’re sorted, right?

Not quite.

Many mountain railways and cable cars are only discounted. Then there is the Swiss Half Fare Card and various regional passes, each with different coverage and benefits.

To work out what actually makes sense, you may find yourself calculating your journey piece by piece, comparing individual fares, mountain excursions and pass combinations.

Suddenly, you have become a train expert and a calculator just to decide which passes to buy.

Getting From City to City Is Actually the Easy Part

Then come mountain railways, cable cars, funiculars, lake connections and panoramic trains such as the Glacier Express, Bernina Express and GoldenPass Express.

Now you need to understand how everything connects, what your passes cover, what needs to be reserved in advance and how long you realistically want to spend travelling each day.

Ideally, a panoramic train should also form part of your journey from one region towards the next, rather than becoming another attraction squeezed into the itinerary.

Your bases, mountain journeys, scenic trains and overall route all need to work together.

By now, you’re researching bases, comparing passes, calculating fares, studying rail routes, checking mountain connections and reservations, and deciding how many nights to stay in each place.

Once you’re ready to proceed, I design the journey around you, not around a pre-set Switzerland tour package.

This includes the routing, accommodation, scenic rail journeys, mountain excursions, private transfers where needed, luggage arrangements, experiences and day-to-day pacing.

The next step is a paid Travel Design Proposal. I’ll explain the proposal fee and what it covers during our consultation, before you decide whether you would like to proceed.

Travel Design Proposal

Once the journey is agreed, we arrange the travel components required for your private Switzerland tour from Singapore and bring them together into one seamless itinerary.

This can include accommodation, Swiss rail travel, panoramic train reservations, private transfers, selected experiences and other arrangements required for your journey.
