Kashgar happens to be my favourite anicent city in southern Xinjiang. It is hard not to love Kashgar, the city that’s equal parts charm, color, and endless surprises! This Silk Road gem has evolved into a lively blend of bustling bazaars, photogenic streets, cozy tea houses, and hidden adventures. Every moment here is an invitation to explore – and if you’re up for a bit more thrill, there’s an incredible side trip awaiting just outside the city.
Things To Do In Kashgar
1. Wander the Grand Bazzar
Let’s start with the heart of Kashgar’s vibe – the Grand Bazaar! This isn’t your ordinary market; it’s a feast for the senses! From the aroma of sizzling chicken skewers to rows of dazzling spices and one-of-a-kind souvenirs, the bazaar is an energetic whirlwind. Friendly Uighur vendors are everywhere, keen to chat, bargain, and share the local flavours with you. It’s hard to leave without a bag of goodies (and a few fantastic memories).
We had a great time watching them dancing and singing whiel selling their chicken skewers. Food is not great, but the energy is infectious.

2. Discover The Magic Of Carpet Street
Calling all photo lovers! Carpet Street is like stepping into a fairytale. Here, the walls are blanketed with intricate carpets, each a splash of color and pattern. Whether you’re posing with traditional designs or admiring bold colors, this street is a photographer’s dream. Every carpet has a story, and the vibrant backdrop makes your travel photos unforgettable.

3. Get Lost In The Old City’s Charming Alleys
Kashgar’s Old City is a maze of character-filled alleys, mud-brick homes, and charming courtyards. Wandering here is like uncovering a secret at every turn, from artisans crafting pottery to the quiet beauty of flower-filled windowsills. Take your time; the slower you go, the more you’ll discover – and every little corner here feels like a postcard.

4. Sip, Dance, and Relax at a Local Tea House
After all that exploring, head to one of Kashgar’s beloved tea houses. Grab a cup of traditional tea, and soak in the cozy, welcoming vibes. Local musicians often play traditional Uighur tunes, adding to the atmosphere. Don’t be shy if someone asks you to join the dance floor! A tea house here isn’t just about the tea – it’s a place to feel part of the Kashgar community.
5. Take a Thrilling Side Trip To Shipton’s Arch

For the adventurous at heart, a trip to Shipton’s Arch is a must. Known as the world’s tallest natural arch, Shipton’s Arch sits about 70 kilometers outside of Kashgar and requires a bit of hiking to reach. This journey is not for the faint-hearted – the trail is rugged, with some scrambling required – but wow, is it worth it!

It did take a lot out of us to attempt, we even had to cheer our guide on. He was complaining the whole time :p:p
Standing beneath this towering, ancient arch feels like discovering a hidden wonder, with sweeping desert views that make every step an adventure. If you’re up for a challenge, Shipton’s Arch will reward you with some of the most unforgettable scenery in Xinjiang.

Kashgar is a city that pulls you in with its charm and keeps you exploring with its vibrant spirit. Plan for at least two days here to fully soak in its magic, with a day dedicated to the city’s sights and a little extra for the adventure of Shipton’s Arch. Whether you’re browsing markets, sipping tea, or standing in awe beneath a natural marvel, Kashgar is ready to surprise you at every turn!
